Some businesses are built from carefully calculated plans, while others begin with a simple moment of curiosity and a willingness to take a chance. For the founders of Sweet Mallows, the journey started with exactly that, a leap of faith, a second-hand industrial mixer bought at auction for R2500, six square tins, and the dream of creating something South Africans had not truly experienced before.
At the time, resigning from a stable job to pursue handcrafted marshmallows sounded risky, especially in a market where gourmet marshmallows were still relatively unknown. But sometimes the most unexpected ideas end up becoming the sweetest ones. Together, husband and wife stepped into entrepreneurship with little more than determination, creativity, and the belief that there was room for something different within the local confectionery space.
That very first industrial mixer, originally worth nearly R20 000, still stands at the center of the business today, continuing to whip batches of fluffy handcrafted marshmallows years later. It has become more than a machine; it represents the beginning of a dream built through resilience, experimentation, and countless hours of learning.

The roots of Sweet Mallows are deeply tied to family from the very beginning. Before the business officially existed, marshmallows first appeared at a family braai for the founder’s father’s birthday. They were simple vanilla marshmallows, but the reaction was unforgettable. Friends and family were immediately struck by how soft, airy, and flavourful they felt compared to the store-bought versions most people were used to.
That moment quietly planted the seed for what would eventually become Sweet Mallows. Family quickly became the brand’s first taste testers, biggest supporters, and helping hands behind the scenes. From late-night packaging sessions to sticking labels well into the evening, the business became a true family effort. Over time, those same loved ones who once tested flavours around the kitchen table became witnesses to the growth of something much bigger than any of them initially imagined.

The inspiration to turn marshmallows into a full business came after discovering gourmet handcrafted marshmallows created by an Australian company. At the time, nothing quite like it existed in South Africa. What began as something fun and experimental soon revealed a clear gap in the market. The founders realized people were ready for a marshmallow experience that felt elevated, nostalgic, and indulgent all at once.
But creating handcrafted marshmallows turned out to be far more complicated than expected. Marshmallows, as the founder jokingly explains, are incredibly temperamental. The slightest changes in temperature or humidity can affect texture, flavour, and consistency. Developing the perfect recipe required endless testing and refinement to ensure the mallows achieved the softness, flavour intensity, and shelf life they envisioned.

That dedication to craftsmanship is one of the reasons Sweet Mallows has managed to stand out so strongly. Unlike traditional marshmallows, their gourmet range delivers a completely different experience. The texture is softer, fluffier, and melts almost instantly in your mouth, while the flavours feel rich, layered, and nostalgic in unexpected ways. Even people who once disliked marshmallows entirely have found themselves converted after trying Sweet Mallows for the first time.
Another aspect that makes the brand unique is its inclusivity. Their marshmallow base is egg-free, something many customers are pleasantly surprised to discover. Select flavours are also dairy-free and gluten-free, allowing more people to enjoy the experience without compromise.

The flavour range itself reflects the creativity and playfulness at the heart of the brand. From Biscoff Cheesecake and Pecan Nut Pie to Cookies & Cream, Caramel, and the beloved Pannekoek flavour, every marshmallow is carefully designed to balance comfort, familiarity, and excitement. Some flavours are inspired by childhood memories, while others emerge from seasonal ideas, family favourites, or pure experimentation.
One particularly loved flavour, Pannekoek, carries its own story. Originally introduced as a Cinnabon-inspired marshmallow, the concept evolved after customers struggled to connect with the name. By leaning into the familiar comfort of a traditional pannekoek flavour, the marshmallow quickly became one of Sweet Mallows’ most recognizable and best-selling creations.
Then there is the signature Bubblegum marshmallow, a colourful favourite that visually resembles the Sweet Mallows logo itself. For children, it feels playful and exciting, while for adults, it taps directly into childhood nostalgia with hints of classic bubblegum flavours many grew up with.

Beyond everyday treats, Sweet Mallows has steadily expanded into gifts, events, wholesale, and even custom creations. Their beautifully packaged variety boxes have become especially popular as gifts because they offer more than sweets, they offer an experience. Customers are invited to explore different textures, flavours, and memories through each handcrafted piece.
The brand has also experimented with highly creative custom marshmallows, including flavours like lavender and black pepper for gin pairings, alcoholic marshmallows inspired by Don Pedro and beer shandy, and even marshmallows designed specifically for drinks and events. That willingness to experiment continues to push the brand into exciting new territory while maintaining the handcrafted quality it has become known for.

Running a handcrafted food business has not been without challenges. Entrepreneurship brought expensive lessons, failed machinery, product losses, and moments where returning to a traditional job seemed tempting. But resilience has become one of the defining ingredients behind Sweet Mallows. Through every setback, the founders chose to continue pushing forward, guided by faith, persistence, and the belief that what they were building mattered.
One of the most meaningful milestones for the business has not simply been sales or growth, but the ability to employ more people along the journey. What started as a tiny operation has gradually expanded into a growing team, creating opportunities for others while allowing the founder more time to focus on marketing, creativity, and growing the brand’s reach across South Africa.
That growth became especially visible when Sweet Mallows moved into a larger premises in October last year, a major step forward that reflected just how far the business had come from its humble beginnings.

The vision for Sweet Mallows is clear. The founders hope to build a brand that becomes as recognizable and beloved as some of South Africa’s iconic confectionery names, while still maintaining the craftsmanship and care that make the mallows feel so personal. They dream of larger facilities, nationwide retail presence, and expanding their product range even further with creations like chocolate-covered marshmallow bites and marshmallow fluff already in development.
But at its heart, Sweet Mallows remains rooted in the same simple feeling that started it all, bringing people joy through something soft, nostalgic, comforting, and made with genuine care. In a fast-moving world, there is something beautifully timeless about that.
