Lesedi Mhlungu is the founder of ‘Lesedi Nailed It’ which is a nail bar that specializes in giving women beautiful manicures and pedicures. I’m a loving, passionate and God fearing mother of 2 who loves giving back to my community when I can. I am supper dedicated to my business, my clients and my family.

Owning my own nail bar has been the hardest thing to do next to parenting. I run every single aspects of my business, and we are currently under construction which has been a beautiful yet stressful process and I am loving every minute of it.

My family owned a beauty salon when I was a child and I spent a lot of time there not knowing that being around them would spark something in me. In her 20’s, my best friend started doing nails as an extra source of income, and that is how it all started. I was struggling to get a job at the time and things were not looking well for me financially, she then decided to teach me how to do nails and gave me her entire kit “I would not have been here without a big push from her”. I spent my time practicing my craft till date.

Am a nail technician that keeps up with trends and the best ways to execute them, one that knows how to keep the books straight and invests in good quality products. What inspires my creativity is strange, it’s good sleep! And I wake up inspired and ready to make someone’s nails beautiful. 90% of my designs are generally based on what I have picked up from my clients personalities, I also check in after a week to find out if they’re still happy with what they left with and what I could improve on regarding my services.

Passion, my willingness to learn and not allowing my success go to my head are what set me apart from the rest. I am grounded  because without passion for this industry I would have a hard time navigating around it, clients are different and difficult to please but your passion is a flame that should always be burning within you in order for you to keep growing.

Discipline and patience are also very important in this field because a business is like a child!  In the beginning progress appears to be very slow but with time it gets there, so discipline helps when the business starts generating income to avoid making impulsive buying decisions, patience is as equally important because our ways to success vary, it may take one business a year to get off the grown and take the other 10 years so be kind to yourself and know that our journeys differ. There may be 1000 nail technicians but there’s one thing about you that has your clients coming back for more.

My kids keep me inspired, because I know that they look up to me with curious growing eyes and I refuse to fail them.

God, my family, my kids ,Keamogetse Shilenge, Keitumetse Tsukudu, and a long list of clients that have been with me since day one and friends who have allowed me use them as models in the beginning of my journey are added to the list people who have believed in my dream and had my back and I thank them so much for being patient with me. I also have a super supportive family that understands how demanding my business is and they help me whenever it is needed. More so my mom, she drops a lot to take care of my kids and help them with home work during month end rush. She makes me lunch and makes sure I’m fed, when I am unable to take my lunch break. Moms are the biggest understated cheerleaders and I would not be here without her continuous support.

The biggest challenge about being a nail technician is misconception that our job is easy, and does not add value to people’s lives and our economy, also  dealing with bad customer reactions is tricky, but I try find to find ways to resolve the problem with the client by getting a hold of them and finding out what exactly dissatisfied them and then working on a solution together, which is why having good people skills will help in dealing with different personalities and individuals in a manner that is respectful and that the client is always happy after a nail session with you. Always remember that “people make the company”

Any tips on how to keep our natural nails healthy?

Always push back your cuticles, hydrate your nail bed with cuticle oil on a daily basis in the evening before bed. Moisturize your hands all the time with a good hand cream, make sure you always clean your nails and if you add any artificial enhancements gel is always good for natural nails, it helps them grow quick and causes less chemical damage as compared to other products. Don’t over file the nail bed if you are a DIY nail technician and finally always take nail and hair vitamins.

TIPS: For nail biters

This is a hard habit to stop but it’s possible by always getting your nails done to avoid biting on them and remembering the negative health impacts nail biting has on your health. Nail infections are caused by various external and internal factors. It is always recommended that once you remove your artificial nails and notice an infection to make sure you visit a doctor or your local clinic to get it cleared and do not do your nails until the infection is 100% cleared to avoid reinfection or the infection spreading.
