Mbali Ndhlovu is a humble ordinary girl born and raised in Alexandra. A woman who was brought up by strong and empowering women, when you live with a powerhouse of women you see them as your role models and that helps one navigate life. I’m a strong woman because of my grandmother and mother who taught me to be independent and always go for what I want.

I’m a graduate, dancer, creative, corporate woman and mother. A young woman who loves life and making change in peoples lives, seeing someone happy or smile because of me makes my day and I am glad that I made a difference in that individuals life.

The love for music inspires me to dance, music makes me happy when am feeling sad and when I dance I go into a different world all together. I always say dancing is my therapy because I believe dance is also a form of expression because one releases every emotion they could be feelings at that time. Whether you are happy or sad it make a difference. It’s a wave of feelings that one experiences the more you allow yourself to feel the better it becomes.

We heard you will be starting dance classes soon? What inspired the idea and what do you hope people take away from your classes?

I saw how people love to dance and how dance makes people happy however most of them are not as good as they would love to be. So my focus was starting dance classes for plus-size women so I could teach them how to dance and was also looking at it being a form of exercise to help become healthier while having fun.

So when I advertised that I would be starting dancing classes I realised that other woman who are weren’t plus-size had an interest, I then opened up the platform everyone even guys can join us! I hope my classes encourage people that anyone can do it and that you don’t have to be a certain size to know how to dance just be yourself and express yourself through dance. I’m not here to judge but teach, and any form of dance genre is allowed because they are all forms of expression. We learn every day and there is no right or wrong way of doing it just let your body move to the rhythm.

I wish women understood that we don’t need approval from the world to feel and look good, you need to accept and love yourself for who you are and that other peoples opinions about you don’t matter, because once you care about what people say and think about you that is when you start doubting yourself , losing your self-esteem and living in misery. So plus-size women should not undermine or compare themselves and also know that they can rock any outfit they choose and look good.

I don’t think we have reached a point where women are accepting of each other for who they are, there are so many plus-size women are trying to pave way but it’s as if our efforts go in vain with all this hate on hate we experience but like I said, we are not there yet” as for people who body shame others, they do not understand the emotional damage it causes, you could be destroying that person with the things you say to or about them and it could even go as far as them committing suicide.

What advice would you give to women who suffer from body dysmorphic disorder ?

I would say that you are beautiful and there is nothing wrong with you. You will be called names and be bullied but keep your head up and continue loving yourself, don’t listen to the noise focus on what matters to you. Don’t be ashamed of your body, embrace it and be confident and no one will break you. And one more thing “be gentle with yourself there is only one you“
