Malik Tijōn On Music Being a Vessel For Redemption, Purpose & Praise

Bonny M | August 29, 2025

From Columbus, Ohio emerges a creative whose talents transcend sound. Malik Tijōn is not just a singer, not just a producer, not just a visual storyteller, he is a multi-hyphenate artist with a calling far greater than fame or acclaim. At the heart of his artistry lies an unwavering devotion to God and a desire to use his gifts for a higher purpose.

Raised in a family steeped in both musical and artistic expression, Malik’s upbringing was a melody in itself. With a mother who filled the home with hip-hop and a grandmother who introduced him to the soothing sounds of neosoul, jazz, Bossa nova, and blues, Malik’s early world was vibrant with rhythm and depth. The influence of his grandparents, both known visual artists and community activists, shaped not just his creativity, but his commitment to purpose-driven work.

He began rapping as a child, and by age nine, was experimenting with beat-making. His love for music deepened in high school and college when he realized that creating beats and lyrics wasn’t just a hobby, it was a calling. That realization would take him from humble beginnings on SoundCloud to collaborations with major artists and recognition as an RIAA 8x Platinum Producer. But success wasn’t without struggle.

Before surrendering his life to Christ in 2021, Malik walked a dark path marked by addiction, heartbreak, and personal battles that nearly consumed him. The loss of his grandmother and a descent into substances and self-destructive habits could have been the end of his story. But God intervened.

Today, Malik’s music is a testimony. Each note, each lyric, is laced with divine purpose. His melodies reflect the pain he’s overcome, the faith he’s found, and the mission he now lives out daily. “I simply am a married man of many talents who above all loves God, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” he shares. “He entrusted me with these talents for His good purpose.”

As an artist, Malik doesn’t aim for shallow entertainment. He writes and performs as a vessel, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide his pen and his voice. “Sometimes I don’t even know what I’m writing or saying until He begins to reveal it to me,” he explains. His creative process is one of revelation, a beautiful mystery unfolding in rhythm and harmony.

Malik’s latest single, “Astonished,” dropping August 8th, is a heartfelt ode to God’s overwhelming love and readiness to embrace us despite our flaws. “It speaks to being in awe of God’s eagerness to be reunited with us,” he says. The visual language of the music video and cover art reflects this idea, using selective color to symbolize the transformation and set-apart nature of a life changed by Christ.

This track is also the lead single off his upcoming EP “Spanish Moss,” slated for release on September 5th. The project pays tribute to the soulful, sample-heavy subgenre of hip-hop popularized by the likes of Alchemist and Westside Gunn, but with a holy twist. Crafted through divine inspiration, the EP marries classic soul textures with meaningful lyricism and alt-R&B inflections. It’s a sonic landscape where praise and artistic expression coalesce.

Listeners can expect Malik’s spiritual journey to echo throughout the EP, pointing to the wonders of God’s creation and the beauty of surrender. Inspired by the biblical concept of “The Unhewn Stone” (Exodus 20:25), the project invites reflection, worship, and admiration for a Creator who redeems, restores, and renews.

So what does Malik hope his listeners walk away with? The simple yet powerful experience of God’s love. Whether it comes in the form of conviction or joy, his music is meant to be felt on a soul level. “We really walk this stuff out over here with Him,” he says.

Through all his work, Malik hopes to leave behind a message of redemption, that no matter how broken or lost someone may feel, through Jesus, all things can be made new. “Following God isn’t corny,” he says. “He’s the original tastemaker.”
