Hailing from the heart of reggae’s birthplace, Kingston, Jamaica, I am Janeel Mills, a soulful talent who has graced stages worldwide as a background vocalist for the past (6) six years and now igniting my career as a lead/solo act. My musical journey is deeply rooted in the vibrant streets of Seaview Gardens, where I discovered my passion for singing at a young age.
Raised amidst the lively rhythm of Seaview Gardens, I bring an authentic perspective to my music, blending my experiences into a rich tapestry of reggae storytelling. My journey into the music scene began during high school, where I honed my craft as a choir and band member. I embraced various opportunities post-graduation, solidifying my reputation as a sought-after background vocalist.
My first gig experience culminated in years of hard work and dedication, performing at local gigs and corporate events. Each opportunity helped shape me as an artist and prepared me for the transformative chapter ahead. I am also a songwriter and when I write a song, I draw inspiration from my experiences growing up in Seaview Gardens and the stories I’ve encountered.
I aim to capture the essence of reggae storytelling while infusing it with my unique perspective. Through my music, I hope to inspire and uplift listeners, offering them a glimpse into Jamaica’s vibrant culture and spirit. I want my songs to resonate with people from all walks of life, connecting them through the universal language of music.
Tell us about your latest single “Johnny” and what inspired the song?
My latest single, “Johnny,” is a heartfelt cover of “Valerie” by Mark Ronson featuring Amy Winehouse. This rendition pays homage to the timeless classic while infusing it with my soulful interpretation. Drawing inspiration from the original track, “Johnny” captures the essence of longing and nostalgia, offering listeners a fresh perspective on a beloved song.
My motivation comes from my passion for music and the unwavering support of my family, friends, and fans. Their belief in me fuels my determination to carve my mark in the reggae industry as a featured sensation. Some of my highlights include sharing the stage with iconic figures like Julian Marley, Sizzla, and Romain Virgo, as well as performing at global venues. These experiences have shaped me as an artist and prepared me for my next career phase. As for handling critics I embrace constructive criticism as a means of growth while staying true to my authentic self and artistic vision. I focus on creating music that resonates with my audience and reflects my genuine passion for reggae.
