For Lutando Zamadiya Makhoba, creativity never existed in just one form. Before crochet hooks, textured yarns, and handcrafted headwear became part of everyday life, creativity already lived in sketchbooks, in sports, and in quiet moments spent imagining something beyond the ordinary. Elahzeey was not created from a perfectly structured business plan or a carefully calculated fashion strategy. It began with curiosity, the simple desire to discover whether there was something more waiting beneath the surface.
With the support of her mother, Lutando decided to explore crocheting, initially as a new skill, but eventually as something much bigger. The idea was deeply personal from the beginning. Instead of relying on overseas fashion pieces, she imagined creating something locally, something expressive, handmade, and rooted in individuality. That vision slowly transformed into Elahzeey, a brand that now exists at the intersection of fashion, art, craftsmanship, and emotional storytelling.
Creativity runs deeply within her family. Growing up surrounded by artistic influences, especially a grandmother who could crochet and knit almost anything imaginable, made handmade creation feel natural rather than distant. Drawing clothing and headwear became one of her favourite forms of expression, and eventually the sketches on paper became physical pieces brought to life through yarn, texture, colour, and experimentation.
That artistic freedom continues to define the identity of Elahzeey today. The brand is bold, expressive, playful, and emotionally layered, a reflection of Lutando herself. Rather than creating pieces that quietly blend into the background, Elahzeey embraces individuality fully. The hats, balaclavas, and beanies challenge traditional expectations of fashion and encourage people to exist loudly and confidently within their own identities. It is fashion designed not simply to accessorise an outfit, but to make people feel liberated within themselves.
That philosophy is rooted deeply in something his mother often told her growing up: “Never look like your problems.” The statement quietly became part of the spirit behind Elahzeey. Every piece carries a sense of confidence, imagination, and emotional release. Whether it is a playful cat beanie inspired by her love for cats, a ruffle hat that honours the beginning of his crochet journey, or a floral balaclava layered with yarn, pearls, rhinestones, denim, and fabric paint, each creation feels deeply personal. The floral balaclava in particular carries emotional weight, a visual reminder that even during dark moments, growth and beauty remain possible.
For Lutando, fashion has never been separate from identity. She views fashion as deeply political, a form of communication that reveals how people think, feel, and move through the world. Through crochet and handcrafted design, she explores emotions, memories, family influences, and personal experiences in ways that words sometimes cannot express. The textures, colours, and dramatic details found within Elahzeey pieces are not random design choices; they are emotional extensions of the creator behind them.
That emotional connection is also why craftsmanship matters so deeply to the brand. In a world dominated by fast fashion and mass production, Elahzeey moves differently. Every piece begins slowly, first as an idea, then a drawing, followed by careful measurements, material research, testing, and handcrafting. Lutando personally wears and tests many of the designs before releasing them, making sure the pieces feel comfortable, durable, and wearable beyond aesthetics alone. Even the smallest details, from the strength of the stitching to the placement of rhinestones, are approached with care and intention. For her, taking time is part of the artistry.
The rise of crochet fashion within modern streetwear and fashion culture feels especially meaningful to Lutando because it reflects something people have been missing for a long time: connection. Handmade fashion carries a sense of humanity that fast fashion often loses. It reminds people of community, conversation, and shared creativity, the same way older generations once gathered together to sew, knit, crochet, and create side by side. That sense of familiarity and emotional connection is part of what makes Elahzeey feel so personal to the people who wear it.

Lutando believes clothing should never feel restrictive, because confidence often begins with comfort. Before selecting a final design, she creates multiple sketches and explores different variations until finding the version that feels both artistically exciting and practical enough to exist within everyday wardrobes.
Her attraction to colour has also evolved over time. Having grown up wearing mostly black, she later discovered a connection to richer tones like burgundy, flamingo pink, and velvet blue, colours she describes as tranquil while still carrying dramatic energy. Those shades now appear naturally throughout her work, helping balance softness with boldness in a way that feels unmistakably Elahzeey.
But behind the creativity, the journey has not always been easy. Balancing a handcrafted fashion brand while studying civil engineering has required discipline, patience, and emotional awareness. Burnout became one of the biggest challenges. There were moments when creative exhaustion made completing projects feel difficult, especially while navigating personal and family struggles. Eventually, Lutando realised the importance of creating balance, dedicating weekends to crocheting, allowing herself space to breathe, and understanding that stepping away temporarily does not mean abandoning the work.
That mindset became especially important during a difficult period in July 2024. While carrying emotional weight behind the scenes, she remembers going for a walk when a young woman approached him wearing one of her pieces. Smiling warmly, she simply said, “I still love my hat.”
The interaction lasted only a few minutes, but its impact stayed with her long afterwards. In that moment, the value of Elahzeey became bigger than fashion itself. The work was reaching people emotionally. It was creating confidence, joy, and connection in ways she had not fully realised before. For Lutando, that moment became motivation to continue pushing forward.
The vision for Elahzeey stretches far beyond crochet headwear alone. Fashion design, sewing, larger collections, and eventually studying fashion formally all form part of the future she imagines for the brand. There is ambition to enter larger creative spaces, collaborate with influential names, and continue evolving artistically without losing the intimacy and emotional honesty that built Elahzeey in the first place.
But even with those ambitions, the heart of the brand remains unchanged. Elahzeey is still rooted in the same thing that started it all, a young creative exploring hidden talents, turning sketches into reality, and discovering that self-expression can sometimes become the very thing that helps people feel seen.
