For Difrnt, music has never been about chasing trends or creating songs that simply sound good. It has always been about capturing real life in its most honest form and transforming everyday experiences into stories people can recognise as their own. Every melody begins with truth, every lyric carries intention, and every record reflects a genuine desire to make listeners feel seen. While many artists create music to entertain, Difrnt creates music that starts conversations, sparks reflection and reminds people they are never alone in what they are experiencing.
Born in Lagos, Nigeria, and of Enugu heritage, Difrnt spent much of his childhood in Abuja after his family relocated there when he was five years old. It was in Abuja that his creative journey truly began. Long before music became his primary form of expression, he found himself drawn to art in many different forms. He loved drawing as a child and became part of a dance group that performed at churches and community events. Those early creative experiences introduced him to the power of storytelling and self-expression, eventually leading him towards the art form that felt most natural, music.
Today, alongside his work as an Afro-Dancehall artist, Difrnt is also a filmmaker, bringing the same creativity and intentionality into every visual and musical project he creates. Whether through sound or film, his goal remains the same: to tell authentic stories that leave a lasting impression.

Some of Difrnt’s earliest musical memories were shaped by people who never realised the impact they were having. His late neighbour, Hajiya, regularly filled the neighbourhood with the music of Lucky Dube. Although he was too young to fully understand the lyrics, the melodies stayed with him and quietly planted the seeds of a lifelong love for music. She also introduced him to the sounds of Awilo Longomba, while family trips to the local barber shop exposed him to an even wider world of music that he eagerly absorbed.
At home, secular music wasn’t a regular part of daily life, with Igbo gospel music providing much of the soundtrack to his upbringing. As he grew older, however, his curiosity led him to discover artists including Usher, Michael Jackson, Styl-Plus, 2Baba, Eminem and P-Square. Buying CDs became more than a hobby, it became an education. Every new artist expanded his understanding of music and gradually inspired him to begin writing songs of his own.
That curiosity eventually turned into commitment in 2011 when he recorded his very first song at a home studio in Wuse 2. Hearing his own voice on a finished record and witnessing people’s reactions gave him the confirmation he needed. Music was no longer simply something he loved listening to; it had become the path he wanted to pursue.

His artistic identity, however, did not develop overnight. For nearly a decade, Difrnt explored rap music while searching for the sound that genuinely reflected who he was. Rather than viewing those years as time lost, he sees them as an essential part of his growth. They helped him understand what resonated most deeply with him as both an artist and a person.
Eventually, everything began to make sense. His lifelong admiration for Lucky Dube naturally drew him towards Dancehall, while Afrobeat reflected his culture, his upbringing and the environment that shaped him. Bringing those two influences together allowed him to create a sound that felt authentic rather than manufactured. Today, Afro-Dancehall has become the space where his storytelling, rhythm and identity come together most naturally.

For Difrnt, songwriting has always been about expressing the conversations that are often difficult to have out loud. Some songs are born directly from his own experiences, while others are inspired by the lives of friends, family members or moments that quietly remain in his subconscious until the right melody appears. Rather than writing simply to entertain, he hopes every song encourages listeners to reflect on love, growth, heartbreak and the realities of everyday life. If someone walks away feeling understood or seeing their own story differently, then he believes the music has fulfilled its purpose.
That commitment to honesty is perhaps most evident in his latest single, Cash No Dey Last. The record was inspired by an experience that millions of people know all too well. After receiving payment for completed projects, he already had plans for how the money would be spent. Yet before he even arrived home, much of it had already disappeared into responsibilities and everyday expenses. What began as excitement quickly turned into quiet reflection about the realities of modern life and the financial pressures affecting people everywhere.

During that journey home, he listened to several beats his producer had previously sent him. The moment one particular instrumental began playing, the melody and hook arrived almost instantly. “Cash no dey last again…” became more than a catchy phrase, it became an honest reflection of a shared reality. The song wasn’t created to complain about life’s challenges but to acknowledge them in a way that listeners could instantly recognise.
Its message reaches far beyond one personal experience. Cash No Dey Last reflects rising living costs, financial responsibilities and the pressure so many people face while trying to build better lives. Through music, Difrnt found a way to transform a universal struggle into something listeners could dance to while simultaneously recognising their own reality. It serves as both social commentary and personal testimony, reminding people that they are far from alone in what they are experiencing.
The authenticity behind the song is also what made the creative process feel almost effortless. Unlike records that require countless revisions, Cash No Dey Last flowed naturally because every lyric came from genuine emotion. Once the right beat appeared, the words followed without force. For Difrnt, it became one of those rare songs that seemed to write itself, proving that the most honest stories often require the fewest edits.

That same authenticity shapes every aspect of his creative process. Inspiration can arrive unexpectedly through a melody, a conversation, a news story or a personal experience that quietly lingers in his mind for months before finding its place in a song. Once the melody arrives, the lyrics tend to follow naturally before he carefully refines every detail until the finished record carries the personality, honesty and energy he wants listeners to hear. Above all, he refuses to create music that feels disconnected from who he truly is.
Years of working independently have also transformed him beyond music itself. His journey has taught him patience, perseverance and the value of consistency. Wearing multiple hats as an artist, manager, marketer and creative director has required continuous learning, but it has also reinforced his belief that creativity is one of God’s greatest gifts. Rather than measuring success only by milestones or achievements, he believes the ability to create meaningful work is already a blessing in itself.
Away from music, Difrnt describes himself as a student of life. He enjoys observing people, listening to their stories and discovering meaning within ordinary moments that many overlook. Filmmaking, football, video games and stand-up comedy provide balance outside the studio, while his natural curiosity continues to influence both his music and his outlook on life. Every experience, conversation and observation has the potential to become inspiration for a future record.

Looking ahead, consistency has become one of the defining themes of this chapter in his career. After committing himself to releasing a new song every month throughout the year, he has remained focused on building momentum through discipline rather than perfection. Alongside those monthly releases, he is also considering bringing them together with brand-new material as part of a full-length album later this year, creating a body of work that reflects his ongoing artistic evolution.
More than commercial success, Difrnt hopes his music becomes part of people’s lives. He wants listeners to celebrate with it, heal through it, reflect because of it and one day hear a song that instantly transports them back to a meaningful chapter of their own story. If his music can create memories while helping people feel connected to themselves and those around them, then he believes he has achieved something truly lasting.
For anyone discovering Difrnt through Cash No Dey Last, he hopes they remember an artist who was never afraid to tell the truth. More importantly, he hopes they recognise someone who values honesty above image, creativity above trends and human connection above everything else. His journey has been shaped by countless influences, but among the most meaningful remains the memory of his late neighbour, Hajiya, whose everyday habit of playing music unknowingly helped inspire a future artist. It is a reminder that even the smallest acts can leave a lasting legacy and through every song he creates, Difrnt hopes to do exactly the same.
