Some brands begin with business plans and strategy. Others begin with something far more personal, a quiet desire to create. For the founder of Chilo Designs Bianca, the journey into handcrafted handbags started not from formal training or a fashion background, but from a simple love for beautiful bags and a curiosity to make something different.
Working in a demanding corporate environment, Bianca found herself craving a creative outlet, something fulfilling to pour her energy into outside of work. Fashion had always been an interest, but not in the conventional sense. Rather than being drawn to mainstream trends, she found inspiration in individuality and unexpected design. Bags, in particular, fascinated her. Their shapes, textures, and possibilities felt like a canvas waiting to be explored. So she took a leap of faith.
Without ever having sewn before, she bought her very first sewing machine, gathered fabric, had pieces of wood cut, and began experimenting. There were no elaborate sketches or formal design processes, just curiosity, patience, and a willingness to learn through doing. From that moment forward, Chilo Designs began to take shape.

The name “Chilo” carries a story of its own. It was one of the Bianca’s mother’s nicknames growing up, and later became the name of one of their beloved family dogs. While the word itself may not have a formal meaning, it holds deep sentimental value, a quiet thread that connects family, memory, and identity.
That personal significance reflects the heart of the brand. Chilo Designs is built on individuality, curiosity, and meaningful connection. Much like the name itself, the brand invites people to pause and ask questions, to discover something unique behind the surface.

At the core of Chilo Designs is a philosophy that statement pieces do not need to be loud to be powerful. Bianca describes herself as naturally reserved, which has strongly influenced her design language. Rather than bold, flashy pieces, she is drawn to subtle statements, designs that stand out effortlessly without overwhelming the wearer.
This philosophy comes to life through the brand’s distinctive use of unconventional materials. Wooden accents and handwoven yarn details, elements rarely associated with handbags, give each piece character and originality. Even the most neutral designs carry texture, personality, and a quiet sense of intrigue.
The result is a collection of handbags that feel distinctive yet versatile. A Chilo bag can complement a trendsetter’s wardrobe just as easily as it can suit a busy mother navigating her everyday routine.

In a world where luxury is often defined by price tags and precious materials, Chilo Designs takes a different approach. For Bianca, true luxury lies in craftsmanship, in the care, patience, and intention poured into every detail.
It’s in the hand-stitched clips, the carefully woven yarn, and the deliberate finishing touches that transform materials into something meaningful. Luxury also lives in the experience surrounding the product: thoughtful packaging, personal connection, and the knowledge that each bag was created with genuine care.
Every Chilo piece is handmade by the founder herself, ensuring that each bag carries the same level of attention and pride she would expect from something she uses personally.

The design process behind a Chilo bag is deeply hands-on and intuitive. Inspiration can come from anywhere, an interesting texture, an unexpected material, or a shape spotted in everyday life.
Instead of beginning with detailed sketches, Bianca works directly with materials, cutting, folding, and shaping them until the structure begins to reveal itself. Prototypes are then used personally for a period of time, allowing her to test the functionality and refine the design. Only after careful adjustments and improvements does the final version move into production. This thoughtful process ensures that every bag is not only visually distinctive but also practical, comfortable, and durable for everyday use.

While the Chilo Crossbody Collection laid the foundation for the brand, the Satchel Sweethearts Collection marked an exciting new chapter.
Recognising that her original crossbody style might not suit everyone’s taste, the Bianca began exploring more classic silhouettes. The Satchel Sweethearts collection emerged from this exploration, a range of practical, spacious bags designed for everyday life while still carrying the signature Chilo aesthetic. The risk of stepping into a new design direction proved worthwhile. Today, the Satchel Sweethearts have become some of the brand’s best-selling pieces, demonstrating the power of evolution while staying true to a brand’s core identity.
Chilo Designs has also expanded into complementary accessories, including sunglasses cases, bag charms, and adjustable straps. These additions allow customers to personalise their bags and refresh their look with small yet meaningful changes.
Sunglasses cases, for example, were inspired by a simple everyday need. While sunglasses are easy to purchase, they often lack a proper case that feels stylish and durable. Creating one that matched the Chilo aesthetic felt like a natural extension of the brand. The Bag charms and interchangeable straps further enhance the experience by allowing each piece to evolve with its owner’s style, reinforcing the idea that a Chilo bag is something personal, adaptable, and uniquely yours.

Rather than chasing trends, Chilo Designs focuses on balance, combining timeless silhouettes with distinctive details. Clean shapes and practical structures ensure that each design remains relevant year after year, while textured materials and subtle accents keep the pieces feeling fresh and modern. The philosophy is simple: a bag that works beautifully in everyday life will never go out of style.
That philosophy also describes the Chilo woman, someone who embraces individuality. She is confident in her identity and chooses pieces that reflect who she truly is, rather than what trends dictate. She might be a corporate professional navigating a busy career, a creative spirit, a mother managing daily life, or someone pursuing a dream of her own. What connects them is an appreciation for thoughtful design and authentic craftsmanship. For her, the story behind the piece matters just as much as the bag itself.

For Bianca, some of the most rewarding moments have come from unexpected places, like seeing a returning customer who first discovered the brand as a stranger. That kind of trust and loyalty carries a special kind of meaning. There are also moments of quiet magic, like learning that Chilo bags were chosen for a bridal party or unexpectedly spotting someone out in the world carrying one of her designs. Those small encounters serve as reminders that something once imagined in her mind has become part of someone else’s life story.
Building Chilo Designs has not been without challenges. Balancing a full-time corporate career while running a handmade brand requires long days, late nights, and relentless dedication. There were also the hurdles of stepping into an industry without formal training. With no background in sewing, materials, or design, the founder had to teach herself everything from scratch. Moments of doubt inevitably surfaced, but perseverance, research, and practice became powerful teachers. Today, every finished bag stands as proof that creativity, patience, and belief can turn an idea into reality.
Chilo Designs is ultimately about more than fashion. It is about individuality, craftsmanship, and the courage to create something different. Each bag carries the quiet confidence of its creator, subtle, thoughtful, and unmistakably unique. And in a world that often celebrates loud trends and fast fashion, Chilo Designs offers something refreshing: a reminder that sometimes the most powerful statements are the ones made quietly, with intention and heart.

Looking ahead, how do you envision Chilo Designs evolving in the world of fashion and luxury accessories?
Looking ahead, I see Chilo Designs growing beyond handbags into more of a lifestyle brand. I’d love to expand into homeware with pieces like cushions, runners, and other décor items, bringing that same focus on texture, detail, and craftsmanship into kitchen and bedroom spaces. I want Chilo to feel like a way of living, not just something you carry.
One of my biggest goals is to introduce a more interactive, custom experience. I envision having a space where customers can choose from pre-designed templates and then personalise their piece by selecting their material, yarn, straps, and finishes. The bag would then be made specifically to their taste. I love the idea of customers being part of the creative process. It makes the piece even more meaningful and truly their own.
I’d also love to see Chilo stocked in boutique, bespoke stores that celebrate handmade craftsmanship, spaces that value individuality, quality, and story as much as I do. Ultimately, I want Chilo to grow thoughtfully and intentionally, while always staying true to its heart: unique, handcrafted pieces that feel personal and timeless.
